Hemsworth Estate
Sunset at Hemsworth Estate
Kicking off my project is the wonderful team from Hemsworth Estate in Ashburton.
I recently had a beautiful gifted stay with Gordo and Lee from Lee Waddle Photography, and we got to enjoy the wonderful full service treatment that everyone who visits Hemsworth Estate gets to experience.
Staying at Hemsworth is not a stay… if you want to pull up, sleep and go, then this is not your place. However, if you’re after a special experience and one that you’ll think about constantly and plan how to get back… then Hemsworth Estate is the place for you.
We spent our time exploring the grounds, learning the history, relaxing in the lounge, enjoying a wonderful 3 course meal, and yes that included Gordo who was always served first, then sleeping in the comfiest beds in rooms that would have so many stories to share if they were able to.
So, let’s kick off with insights from Rebecca and Jema, and of course their Chief Greeter Willow, their adorable Cavoodle.
These are their unedited words…

Hemsworth Estate has been in Rebecca's family for four generations. Rebecca and her mum Margie originally started the business to honour the special memories they both had growing up, and to invite others to make their own memories here.
Our first wedding was a huge challenge, as there were extensive renovations being done to the 1911 Homestead, and 5 weeks of straight rain meant we couldn't finish the roof. Cleaners were working directly behind the carpet layer, and then everyone pitched in the move furniture back into the house as a marquee was being set up. It was chaos and I don't know how we managed it but we did! Luckily, we are extremely efficient and organised when planning events now.
What inspired you to start your business?
A love of family history, and continuing legacy is the main reason. Plus we love hosting and wouldn't want to be anywhere else!
What problem were you looking to solve?
Helping locals make special memories. There's not many unique places for hosting special occasions like milestone birthdays, weddings, and work dos.
Do you feel you’ve solved that problem or has it evolved?
Both! We are definitely the place to be when it comes to celebrating! But we've now evolved to help some really unique people, like us. We now offer dog-friendly boutique Bed and Breakfast experiences, and you can even have your dog at your wedding or elopement.
What were you most afraid of when starting and how did you push past?
I honestly cannot remember what we were most afraid of when we first started. I think when we decided to take this full time, it was if we were the right fit for the Mid-Canterbury market, and I'm glad to say most of our wild ideas have paid off.
What inspires you to continue growing and developing your business?
Customer satisfaction and feedback, Impact on the community/society, Financial achievements
Expand on what inspires you and any other thoughts you’d like to share.
The Mid-Canterbury district is a firm supporter of local initiatives, and we always want to keep that front of mind in what we offer. Even though our services have surpassed what some call "Town Level" we keep our pricing and accessibility in mind to our small town.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration as a business owner?
Tiktok! The world of imaginative people creating wonderful experiences for people all around the world always inspires us to bring those new ideas to our small pocket of the world.
Do you have mentors and/or advisors that you work with?
I think between Jema and I there's more ideas than we know what to do with. But we do have a fantastic support system of friends and chosen family who are there when we need it most.
What do you find are your biggest challenges and what do you do to keep yourself in the best shape to face these?
In hospitality, I think we all face customer expectations as the biggest challenge. For us we're constantly refining our experience and also how and what we communicate to clients. It's definitely a mental perspective game, but we stay on the bright side mostly.
Would you recommend starting a business?
Maybe, depending on the circumstances.
What learnings do you have for those looking to step into business?
Probably too many. I'd say never forget to vet your idea. Market research and validation is really key.
Rebecca, Jema and Willow, thank you so much for being so open, candid and amazing to work with! I can’t wait to see you all again and I definitely know that Gordo feels the same way.
